South Korean movies do tend to have big emotional swings, almost to the point of melodrama. They also often have radical tonal shifts as well. The movies of Bong Joon-ho are the perfect example of this, where it can go from gritty realism to broad slapstick in the blink of an eye.
I think the remake of SUSPIRIA is an utter masterpiece. There is SO MUCH going on in that movie, it rewards repeat viewings. That final scene with Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton as the old dude is the most quietly devastating scene in any horror movie I think I’ve ever seen. To end a horror movie on such an emotional note is astounding. I urge Stee to give it another shot.
Also this year was the excellent French Netflix horror series MARIANNE. It never hesitates to throw every single scare trope at you, but because you spend so long with the characters it all works much better than the average Blumhouse jump-scare machine. I had a great time with that.
I’m sad that Hellraiser wasn’t mentioned once, even for the “Franchises in Need of a Reboot” section.
At least there’s this:

I didn’t even know that was in development! Well, if ever there was a time to start a Hellraiser, 2020 would be it. I’d even take an anthology at this point.
